Lingua franca

Just learned today.  Lingua franca is a language used by people with different mother tongue.   For instance, English is the Lingua franca.

Apparently, the original lingua franca came up around Renaissance era.  It was a mixture of Italian (80%), French, Greek, Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese and Arabic.

Wow.. people in the old times are really polyglots.
